Jerez Travel Guide

Jerez de la Frontera (or simply Jerez) is located in the southern Spanish region of Cadiz. Jerez is the second largest city in the province of Cadiz. There is no bad time to visit Jerez because the city hosts a large Holy Week celebration in April, a horse fair in May, an Autumn Festival in September and October, as well as lively Christmas celebrations.

Main sights in Jerez vary from the countryside and the history of the city to the museums and other cultural locations. Of note, the bodegas of Jerez, including Sandeman, Tio Pepe, Domecq, and Harvey’s are popular places to visit. In February and March each year, the city celebrates the art of Flamenco music and dance with the world-famous Flamenco Festival. Popular places to visit at this time include Andalusian Flamenco Centre, Ciudad Del Flamenco, and La Taberna Flamenca. Historical sites surround the old city walls at Calle Muro, Calle Porvera, and Calle Ancha, which is also home to the monument dedicated to Jerez-born Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, who is most known for his discovery of Florida.

Jerez also offers many museums, palaces, and cathedrals to peruse. The Archaeological Museum [Tel: 956 350 133], Atalaya Museums [Tel: 956 182 108] (featuring the Palace of Time-dedicated to clocks, and the Mystery of Jerez- dedicated to wine), and the Museo Taurino [Tel: 956 323 000], dedicated to bullfighting, all reflect the region and its wonderful cultural offerings. There are a number of Palaces in Jerez. Most notably of these are the Domecq Palace, a Palace of Cultural Interest, Bertemati Palace, which now houses the Episcopal Diocese of Jerez, and Palacio de los Condes de Puerto Hermoso, which now houses the local police station. Finally, no tour of Jerez would be complete without a visit to some of the most notable churches in the area. Jerez Cathedral, the Santo Domingo Convent, and the monastery of Santa Maria de la Defension are a few not-to-be-missed sights.

Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines, and TUIfly are just a few of the airlines that fly into Jerez Airport (XRY), located 8 km in the northeast of Jerez city. Car hire from Jerez airport is available through the following characters:
